Show review: by Audrey Pearson:
It was really quite the crowd at Whistler. There were kids, doggies, young people, elders, locals, tourists – all there to see Bruce. And party. There was a grassy area, and a concrete area next to the stage, which I figured was for dancing and standing, since no one had set up their chairs there. About 15 minutes before the gig started, people surged to the front and stood right by the stage so I knew that was my cue to join them. Always follow the locals. They know.
The concert opened with a traditional song from two young Squamish singers. The song was about a cougar and how Squamish people take their strength from cougars. It’s traditional to open with a song for any occasion, so Whistler got it right. People are getting it right more and more. Somewhere in the gig Bruce said to the Nations, it was “an honour to be on your turf.”
We at the front could see Bruce sitting at the bottom of the stairs so we started cheering and the crowd followed suit. Bruce bounced up the stairs with a big smile on his face. Yes, Bruce did bounce despite the two canes. He seems to have to figured out how to best walk with his new normal.
